Transport Lembata

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

The chief of police in Larantuka in west Flores will issue you a pas ja/an. The island of Lembata is all walking or horseback. Put a pack on your back and take some gifts along. The horses from the lowlands can't take the highlands and the highland horses can't take the lowlands. Go to a priest and he'll get you a horse for a short while, or buy one for about Rp15,000. Every 10 km or so there's a good-sized mission which you should use as much as possible; they'll always feed you and give you a nice bed. If you meet one priest, he'll fix you up with an introduction to another. Mostly Dutch priests are assigned here though now they're changing over to Indonesians; when the Dutch on the island die, there will be no more. Father Schmitz (an American from Chicago) is in the south, and Father Giust's village is only 12 km from Lowolava. Father Giust has an excellent map of Lembata on his wall. You can also stay quite comfortably with the kepala desa in each village. Register with the police at each police post, they're keen on you doing it because they want most of all just to meet you.
