Religion In Flores

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

At least 2/3's of the population are Roman Catholics, the largest single R.C. community in Indonesia. Catholicism was first introduced by the Portugese trading fleets and when control of the island passed to the Dutch it continued to grow. The Dutch brought out their own priests and refused entry to all other Christian de nominations. Now, from the central towns to the most remote villages you find tall reinforced concrete churches on hilltops with pointed spires, large beautifully appointed structures, all funded by churches and donations from the country of origin. The missions are quite strong and rich on Flores and you must depend upon them for transportation and accommodation. Everybody seems to work for the missions. But don't be deceived; not all Florenese accept wholeheartedly this western religion. You see in the villages sites for pure animist rituals, round grass areas surrounded with stones where the people dance to celebrate the planting and harvesting of crops and for weddings and burials. Peculiar organic arrangements like scarecrows of dried branches and leaves dressed with various articles are placed around the villages to keep away evil spirits. Outside villages, stone pillars are set up to receive offerings to the gods, and to perpetuate the power of those who erected them. You can still find graves consisting of Stonehenge-like clumps of stones surmounted by a large slab. Muslims are found mainly in the ports.
