Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

Mt.
Arjuna: 3344 m. From the village of Pandaan, take a
bemo or minibus to Tretes hill station (750 m). Immediately
above Tretes one will find a cobblestone paved trail;
take this one and not the one to the water creek. It's
a very good highly used trail which leads to the summit.
Mt. Arjuna has pine forests higher up and beautiful
meadows. At 1600 m there's water and one small bush
hut with just a roof, only a rain shelter. The trail
continues to another water source at a sulphur mining
camp at 2450 m and leads up to near the summit where
there's a sulphur quarry. Duration: from Tretes to the
top it would be a long day, up and back. Mt. Lawu: 3265
m. Approach Mt. Lawu from Madiun or Solo on the road
from Sarangan to Tawangmangu. Go to the village of Cemorosewu
(1840 m elevation) where there are two radio TV antennae.
The trail begins 300 m to the west of Cemorosewu, immediately
west of the bridge. A very good well used trail continues
to the summit from there. The trail encircles the mountain
and the final ascent is actually from the northeast.
There are several huts plus emergency shelters on the
way up: the 1st hut is at 2400 m, the 2nd at 2850 m,
and the 3rd at 3100 m. A darma (pilgrims' hut) is at
3125 m elevation and there's another little shelter
only 2 m from the summit. A shrine with baskets of flowers,
and remnants of old temples and terracing are near the
top.Mt. Semeru: 3677 m. Highest peak on Java. Mt. Semeru
could be very active, booming. From Lumajang, take the
road towards Pronojiwo. 5 km east of Pronojiwo there's
a town called Supit Orang at 750 m. From here there's
a dirt road up about 1 km towards the mountain to the
town of Supit Orang II. Then from Supit Orang II up
to Kamera (800 m elevation) it's approximately 2 km.
There's traffic on these roads, the village truck, etc.
At Kamera there are a lot of roads criss-crossing, but
keep to the main trail to a point 200 m north towards
the mountain, then turn and walk 300 m east of the main
trail where there's a spring, the last chance for water.
Then the trail goes up a slight slope for 2 km through
sugar-cane at all different stages of maturity. Cut
some and take it up the mountain with you for quick,
pure and natural energy. At 1200 m, the highest portion
of the sugar-cane cultivation, the trail ends. The best
and easiest route from here right up through the forest
is a dry creek bed. There are some bath-sized potholes
in this creek bed which could contain water (it could
also be stagnant). At 1700 m you emerge from the forest.
See new volcanic flows coming down. Here you can camp
right near the gully. Your tent is safe, nobody is around.
To get to the summit simply go up the right side of
the avalanche gully of lava straight to the top. Duration:
for a fit person, two days from Supit Orang; for an
unfit person, three days.
