Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

Glorious
scenery. Discovered by a Dutch flier, Wissel, in 1936
while making an aerial survey for an oil company. Three
enchanted lakes are entirely surrounded by blue mountains.
The most spectacular, Lake Paniai, is 24 km long and
18 km wide with sloping hills rising up from it. There
are two other smaller olive-green lakes. None of them
contain fish, only freshwater shrimp. No mosquitoes
here. Women seine at night from log bi)ats, building
fires in them to keep warm. Paniai Lake has waves but
no current. A heavy mist comes in low over its waters
in the early morning and from 9 am clouds start to obscure
the mountain walls around the lake. The surface is calm
until 11 am when a strong wind sweeps across it and
breakers crash against the shore. This area is the home
of the Moni and the Ekagi tribes. The Ekagi (or Kapaukus)
are a healthy, muscular, black-skinned pygmoid people
less than 1.50 m short. One of the first Europeans who
visited Paniai described them as 'childlike, carefree,
undependable, selfish, deceitful, transparent, credulous,
superstitious, fairly industrious, timid, but not without
racial pride' getting there: Enarotali is a town on
a high plateau near the lakes. AMA operates a fortnightly
flight from Wamena (no fixed price) to Enarotali and
vice versa. Best is to arrange this flight at Sentani
Airport (40 km from Jayapura). Another way to get to
Enarotali is from Nabire. Biak to Nabire daily flights
cost Rp19,000. There are also boats from Biak to Nabire,
Rp4-5000. It's cheaper if you just buy a through ticket
on a flight from Biak all the way to Enarotali, Rp22,000,
with a stopover in Nabire. from Enarotali: AMA Catholic
airlines operates flights from Enarotali and from Nabire
to Ilaga, Kokonau, Mimika, Timuka, and Agats.
