Land Of irianjaya

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

80% covered in forests and dense jungle. Although it has an unusual lack of wildlife, Irian Jaya has wilder landscapes, more impenetrable and treacherous jungle than any other tropical region, including the Amazon Valley and Africa. Several small pockets of unexplored territory are left and maps are still difficult to find. There are thousands of miles of brilliant white sand beaches lined with coconut palms, wild forest streams plunging down rockfaces, snowfields, torquoise and green colored lakes strewn with glacial rock and debris, heaths and yellow marshes with head high grass, stands of pine trees, wild sugar cane meadows, casuarina groves, moss carpeted forests with bright flowers growing all over them. There will be silences you will remember. The greater part is mountainous with a high central backbone extending for 640 km. The highest peak, Gunung Jayawijaya, is 5490 m, and 10 others are over 4900 m; some mountains are so high that planes must fly between them to avoid turbulance. Although situated just 40 degrees below the equator, some mountaintops are permanently covered in snow, often over 90 m deep. This system of central ranges compares in structure and relief to the Swiss Alps, but the communication problems here are much more immense. High mountain regions are broken up by coarse grassy valleys and rainforests. Soil is generally poor in the south, but rich in the north. In the shallow south and southwest, heavy rainfall year round has created a mosaic river system that snakes through hundreds of miles of vast mangrove swamps and tidal forests. The most untouched part of Irian Jaya is between Wamena and the border of P.N.G.- no government posts, no missions, just you and them and the jungle.
