News at the Docks

As the Prop Turns... September, 2004

Same Stuff, New Name!

The rains have started, the winds have driven the home port boats in & finally we are wrapping up what was a great summer season at Comox fisherman’s Wharf!  This summer saw an increase in visiting vessels, & we would like to thank everyone for leaving “D” & “H” dock available for our out-of-town guests. As of mid-September there has been over 1,350 pleasure boaters stay overnight in your harbour & by the sound of it, they will be back again next year. Just like us, they are eager to see the completion of a building with REAL toilets, showers & laundry!

We secured 4 summer students this year through the generous support of HRDC (Human Resources Development Canada) & the Comox Indian Band &, as you can see, our traditional red rails have had a new coat of paint & we were able to staff the office & docks 7 days a week from 9 am to 8 pm. Many thanks for their continued support.

For the first time ever, we have a waiting list of recreational vessels looking for full-time moorage. The building boom in the Comox Valley has affected us & many new boat owners are scrambling for dock space. Even though we are a rafting facility, we will continue to maintain a safe number of vessels in the harbour & slowly welcome in new vessels as space allows. If you have a new vessel alongside, introduce yourself & discuss your mooring needs (inside, outside, winter lay-up, winter fishery, etc.)

On and Around the Docks

Yes, we’ve been hearing it for months - the winch doesn’t have a motor yet! Although it seems an easy fix, we are very thorough in our planning & are planning a hydraulic system to power the winch, which is extremely expensive & requires the approval of the Board of Directors. This item will be on the agenda for the next Board meeting. The graffiti on the winch was un-necessary!
Within the next 6 weeks a barge/piledriver will need access to the new building site & the majority of the boats on the breakwater side of “C” dock will have to be moved to allow entrance of the barge. This is planned as a one-day shuffle as the barge enters & then again (in approximately 5 weeks) as it leaves. We will contact vessel owners individually when we have a firm date scheduled.
It is recommended that vessels moored in the harbour have liability insurance. An incident with an uninsured vessel is usually costly & very complicated.
All vessels are checked on a semi-annual basis to ensure their CFV licenses are up to date. A recreational charge will be applied to every vessel not showing a valid license.

Courtenay Slough News

The slough was underutilized this summer & it was a quiet & peaceful place.
Steve continues to do electrical testing at the slough twice a week. He does both AC & DC testing on 4 stations all along the dock. The electrical log is in the office for vessel owners to review. There has been no variance in voltage so far this year.
“Key-holders” continued to abuse the dumpster by bringing house-hold garbage down for removal. Please be reminded that CVHA users pay for this service & should not have to subsidize your personal garbage. As a result the dumpster was removed for the summer months & will not return until September 30.
Courtenay Car Centre has fixed the bank that collapsed in the spring & it is now safe to moor vessels along the inside of the float.
Doug & Judy (Moon Raven) will be helping us again this winter in the slough. As staff is not on site on a daily basis their attention is a big asset to the CVHA staff & the users of the Courtenay Slough. We provide them with a list of vessel owners & their phone numbers for emergency situations.

Comox Valley Hydraulic & Industrial Supply

#2-2441 Cousins Road, Courtenay, British Columbia

The board & staff would like to welcome (a new but not) business operator to the Comox Valley & the fleet at Comox Harbour. John & Dale offer a wide variety of services & supplies that can get almost any vessel operating. One feature that CV Hydraulic & Industrial Supply has above all their competitors is the fact that John Fitzpatrick was a commercial fisherman for many years & owned & operated the gulf troller, ANU. Mechanics, welding, hydraulics, they know their stuff & they know boats. Give John or Dale a call at :(250) 338-6001 or stop by the shop at #2-2441 Cousins Road in Courtenay. Thanks for being our 1st sponsor in the CVHA newsletter!
