Home Insurance Doesn't Have to Cost You an Arm and a Leg
Everybody who owns a home has to have home insurance, but that does not mean that your home insurance has to cost you an arm and a leg. There are many things that you can do that will lower your home insurance premiums. You will find several of these things discussed below. Know in advance, though, that the availability of some of these will all depend on where you live and what insurance company you use.
Home Insurance Savings Related to the Actual Policy
You should always shop around and compare rates and premiums from several different home insurance companies. Rates and premiums will vary widely depending on the company so this is one very easy, and very important, thing that you can do to get lower premiums on your home insurance. Although you might not have thought of it, raising your current deductible to a higher one will save you money on your monthly premiums.
This is because if you are willing to pay more yourself, out of your own pocket, should the need to file a claim arise, then your insurance company will reward you by making you pay less on the premiums each month. Just do not raise the deductible to an amount higher than you could actually pay out of your own pocket. There are also many insurance companies that will give you a discount on your premiums if you have more than one type of policy with them.
Home Insurance Discounts
The age and structure of your home can affect the cost of your insurance premiums. If you live in a newer home you might be eligible to receive discounts on your home insurance premiums because the electrical, plumbing, and heating systems, as well as the overall structure, are more likely to be in good condition. Some insurance companies will even offer you discounts if you are a non smoker. They also might offer you a discount if you are over 55 years old.
Also make sure to tell your insurance company if you have safety and security devices installed on your home. These include, but are not limited to, deadbolts, alarm systems, and smoke detectors. Having these types of devices installed on your home will garner you a discount with some insurance companies.
If you are a member of an alumni, business, or other type of association, talk to your association's head about whether or not they have deals with any insurance companies to offer discounts to members of your association. You also might receive a discount on your home insurance premiums if you have had your home insurance with the same company for a specific number of years. Talk to your insurance agent to find out if this is available to you.
Miscellaneous Home Insurance Savings
When you are trying to decide how much home insurance you need do not include the value of your land in your calculations. Your land will not be covered by the insurance, only your home will, so including the value of it in your calculations will raise your insurance premiums unnecessarily. You should review your policy each year to see if your insurance requirements have changed.
If you have sold a valuable possession that you had covered under the insurance then you will not need as much insurance. On the other hand, if you have made additions to your home (such as a garage) then you will need more insurance than you currently have.
