Other Car Insurance Options
In this article, we will continue to look at other options that you can choose from to avail yourself of a comprehensible car insurance package. In my previous articles, we have talked about liability coverage, medical coverage and PIP(Personal Injury Protection). In this article, we will discuss two more types of car insurance packages - uninsured motorists coverage and underinsured motorists coverage.
Uninsured Motorists Coverage - Your Car Insurance Policy May Be No Good Without It!
What happens if you are the victim of an accident involving a driver who does not have a car insurance policy? This question is a very pertinent one. It is pertinent because a number of drivers that are involved in automobile accidents do not have insurance coverage. In the United States, the number of drivers without car insurance coverage is a startling 14%. This is a large figure by any standards.
Coming back to the question posed earlier, if you are involved in or are the victim in an accident where the driver does not have car insurance, the insurance company is not going to pay you a cent as compensation. Whatever money you think you will receive will have to come from the driver's own pocket. That usually means a courtroom situation and needless trauma.
Here is the good thing about having uninsured motorists coverage. In case you are involved in an accident involving an uninsured driver, you can still get the driver to take care of all your medical expenses. This expense includes expenses for physical injury as well as damage caused to your property. Besides this, there is another interesting angle to this form of car insurance.
If you have this cover, you, the victim, can get the driver in the accident to pay not only your physical expenses, i.e. medical bills, operation charges, etc, you can also ask for compensation towards the pain and suffering you have endured. This is one of the main reasons why this car insurance package is so important.
This implies that you can ask for a figure besides your medical expenses as supplementary compensation. This package applies to any other passenger who might be a victim along with you. While opting for this form of car insurance, keep the limits that you are applying for at around the same level as the limit that your basic liability coverage carries. Keeping a slightly higher margin would probably be a good idea, as it would provide protection (in the form of compensation) for your family members as well.
Underinsured motorists coverage is somewhat similar to the uninsured motorists coverage. This package helps you, as a victim, to avail compensation from drivers who are not adequately insured. Sometimes, these two packages are grouped into one single package, owing to their similarity.
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorists Car Insurance Cover - What is the Limit?
Having a matching figure for your liability coverage and uninsured motorists coverage limit makes perfect sense - if you are willing to pay out X amount as compensation in case you are the one responsible for the accident, you might as well ask for a similar amount from a driver whose victim you might become!
