What Does Travel Insurance Cover?
Travel insurance will normally cover you for many different things and events that could happen to you while traveling. If your baggage is lost or delayed you will be covered. When you have belongings stolen or lost you normally have coverage for those items, although there may be a limit on how much is paid out per item and all total. You might get hurt or have an accident while you are traveling and travel insurance will pay for hospital and medical treatment.
If you are too sick to travel or have a death in the family the cancellation of your travel plans will be covered. You might experience delays while you are traveling and those will be covered, but usually only if they are for 12 hours or longer. You can also get special travel insurance for different types of trips, such as winter sports and diving.
What Does Travel Insurance Not Cover?
Your belongings will most likely not be covered if they are lost or stolen due to negligence on your part, such as leaving them out on the beach while you are swimming or forgetting them beside the pool at your hotel or elsewhere. If you change your mind about wanting to go ahead with your travel plans you will not be covered. You have to take out a special travel insurance policy if you are planning on pursuing hazardous activities, such as winter sports and diving, or those activities will not be covered under your policy.
What Should You Think about When Considering Travel Insurance?
There are many things that you should think about while you are comparing and shopping for a travel insurance policy. Make sure you find out what level of coverage and what the policy excess is for different claim types. You also need to find out what the exclusions on the travel insurance policy are. If the policy does not cover hazardous activities, such as winter sports and diving, then you need to find out if that company offers this type of policy.
Does the policy cover you if you decide not to go ahead with your travel plans? If so, what are the circumstances under which the policy will pay out? If the policy includes coverage for hospital and medical treatment? If so, does that coverage include what it will cost for you to travel back to your country? You should also find out how long a delay has to be before it will be covered and what the specific level of coverage is for delays.
Also, find out what amount of coverage your belongings will be covered for. Do you often take very long trips or multiple trips per year? If you do then you need to find an insurance company that will provide a travel insurance policy for those special circumstances. There are annual policies, single trip policies, multi trip policies, and winter season policies available to cover all possible travel scenarios.
