UNIX and NT are the two most popular platforms. UNIX is the favorite and easiest to use. It is easy to configure, allows you to set file permissions, and has the most free scripts available. It supports Perl and PHP3.
NT was created by Microsoft. There are fewer free scripts available. You are likely to need assistance from your Web host for file permissions. If you are using ASP, Access, FrontPage or Cold Fusion, you need a NT server.
Technical Support
Some web hosts offer phone support or live chat. If they have neither, make sure they have email support and not just a FAQ. Getting the help you need should be a priority.
Site Hosting Fees
Some hosts charge an initial set up fee while others are free. Monthly fees can range upwards from $3.99, depending on the plan and services available. The cheapest will offer less with less support. The most expensive will be too much for a small business. Use both the setup and monthly fees to compare provider offers.

Generally, 20 to 30 MB is plenty for most Web sites. Less than that and you might soon need additional space. Make sure you can upgrade without incurring a large fee. Otherwise, look for more space from the beginning. It is better to have more than enough.

Cheaper hosts often do not provide email. I would not signup with a host without it! Having the ability to manage email so my customers can contact me using my domain name is important and should be to you if you have an online business.

Knowing where your visitors originate and what pages they visit is important. Statistics software is the best solution but having access to log files will work.
