Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

If you take a bus to Padang, there's up to 5 river crossings, you are tortured by raucous local music for 48 hours with your knees rammed up your throat and kids spewing in your lap. Merpati flights to: Padang, once weekly, Rp15,000; Jambi, 5 weekly, Rp7000; Jakarta, Rp17,000. There are also Garuda flights from Palembang to the small island of Tg. Pinang, Rp13,000, from where you can catch a launch further to Singapore for Rp4200. for Singapore, Jakarta, Medan: Some cattle boats to Singapore take passengers, but you almost sleep with the cattle and their flies. Quite a cheap fare though. Takes a long time to get out of the Musi River, the delta of which is 380 km wide. Or catch a riverboat, about 4-5 times a week, overnight down Palembang's ancient highway to the sea to Muntok, Rp2500. Then take the Pelni boat on Tues. up to Tg. Pinang for Rp11,800. This 4 hour trip from Muntok to Tg. Pinang is the most expensive boat fare in Indonesia for the distance, it actually costs less to travel all the way up to Medan. (There are also less regular cheaper boats.) On Sat., the same Pelni boat returns from Medan and stops in Tg. Pinang on its way back to Jakarta. trains for Jakarta: Take a bemo, Rp50, across the bridge over the river to the Kertapi Train Station in Palembang. There's a daily train from there to Panjang. From Panjang take a ferry across the Sunda Strait to Merak on the Java side and then on to Jakarta for around Rp1200-2000 (depending on the train). The ferry takes 4-5 hours. Rp600. for Jambi: The bus to Jambi from Palembang costs at least Rp3000, takes 36 hours. You pass through a flat ghostly country full of oil derricks and dry tufted grass or rolling meadows of yellow flowers and swamps, and more swamps. An alternative is to ask around the river pier for a barge via Banjunglincir to Jambi. Two days through dense riverine jungles with fireflies, flying foxes and lemurs, exotic birds, crocodiles, plenty of monkeys; an Amazon-like, untraveled region. Hazy departure schedules, Rp22500. From Banjunglincir you can also go by river to Nyogan through heavy jungles, then take the track from Nyogan to Palembang. This same route is possible from Jambi.
