Between Padang and Bukittinggi. Bigger and as beautiful as the more popular Lake Maninjau in the north, Lake Singarak has roads and a railway. You can see the whole lake from the train. In B. Ombilim stay in either the Jayakarta Hotel, Rp3000 double, or at Wisma Singkarak, Rp1500 double. Visit the little village of Batu Tebal on the lake, Rp350 from Padang by the longer back road to Bukittinggi. Stay in the Minang Hotel, Rp2000 double or single; good meals served including fish fresh from the lake. More remote and inaccessible lakes in this region are Danau Diatas and Danau Dibawah; good swimming in all of them. Isolated orthodox Muslim communities live on their shores.
