Sights of Palembang

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

See the Sultan's graveyard. Historical relics in Limas House. Palembang's crowded original Chinese quarter, Pasar Illir, down on the river, is 2 km of funky market selling anything and everything. Also visit smaller Pasar Kuto. See the old benteng built in 1780 with its tall withewashed walls, now occupied by the army (invariably the army occupies historic forts in Indonesia). Rumah Bari: A small but important museum with the largest and the best of the sculptures from Pasemah, a plateau near Lahat which contains some of the most important megalithic statuary in S.E. Asia. On the front lawn is a stone elephant, a stone Buddah, and about 5 other sculptures. The first building of the museum contains ethnography and archaeology!: stone implements from the Mesolithic period (15,000-3000 B.C.), ancient spears, daggers, old native guns, wooden sculptures from Kayuagung, a headless statue from Candi Gedung, house lamps, weaving models, Chinese blue and white porcelain, royal oars, bright gilt and red Palembang chests, fish traps, basketry. Bring a flashlight because the lighting is atrocious. The building in back houses the Natural History Muesum: a stuffed tiger, iquana, Malayan black bear, Slow Loris, many birds such as the elang taut (white-bellied sea eagle), Great Argus Pheasant, ular sawah (ricefield snake). Gending Sriwijaya: This dance is the only remains of the 7th Century kingdom, a welcome dance which traditionally greets V.I.P.'s arriving in the city. Elaborate headdresses are worn with slivers and spears of gold and draped in thick multi-colored brocades. Fingertips have long arching gold fingernails from which trinkets dangle. Seven girls ('princesses') kneel before the guest, never looking him in the face. At the end they offer him betelnut.
