History of Enggano

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

Stone implements were used here as late as the 19th Century. Since the Engganese are descendants of aboriginal Sumatrans who fled when Malaysians began to arrive on the mainland, there's no Hindu influence in their history. These islanders used to arm themselves with firehardened 2 m long spears embedded with shark's teeth or fishbones and lurk behind coral reefs in war canoes, waiting for stray adventurers. Due to cholera, venereal diseases and malaria, the Engganese have been steadily declining towards extinction since 1866; at one point, in 1928, they were down to only 162. Once compared with the Tasmanian aborigines as one of the few instances of a total genocide of a people, preventative medicine saved them. Villages used to dot the coasts, but only 5 remain.
