SIT Welcomes Tibetan Educators

School for International Training (SIT) is pleased to announce the arrival, on Sunday, August 8th of the participants and translators who will attend the Tibetan Language Teaching Enhancement Program, a collaborative project between SIT's Center for Teacher Education, Training and Research and Columbia University's Weatherhead East Asian Institute. The SIT Center, the practice arm of the school's Department of Language Teacher Education, offers short-term professional development courses and other academic and project opportunities to working professionals and graduates from the U.S. and all over the world.

The Tibetan Language Teaching Enhancement Program is designed to provide six Tibetan teachers of Tibetan and their head of department short-term professional development in language teaching, specifically focused on experiential education, reflective practice and a more communicative, student-centered approach. Workshops will be conducted by SIT faculty and staff, including adjunct faculty, TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate trainers and Center staff.

In addition to teacher training sessions, the participants will have the chance to learn more about heritage language and culture preservation, as well as U.S. culture. While they are here, the Tibetans - most of whom have not been in the U.S. before will be given the chance to participate in a number of socio-cultural activities. These include a trip to Boston, and a visit while there to Harvard University, local visits to a nursing home and a boys and girls club, to share about Tibetan culture, a trip to Burlington, Vermont to explore the Abenaki Cultural Center, and several excursions in and around Brattleboro.
