Guangzhou is the capital as well as the center of commerce
and foreign trades, situated in the southern part of China mainland
sprawling over the fertile plain of the Pearl River. It is an
ancient city with a history of 2,800 years, formerly known as
Yangcheng which means "Goat city". Its name originated in
a legend saying that the city of Guangzhou was founded by Five
Immortals riding five rams; each ram planted an ear of rice grain
which symbolized abundant harvest and prosperity; hence its
nickname.
