Undelete a file and you can feel like a million dollars! Especially if the file is one that is needed for that presentation you have a noon today. You are not the only computer user ever to need to undelete the file you just deleted. That is why the recycle bin has been placed on our desktop's without us even asking. Those operating system designers know what agony it is to lose a file so they have made it a little bit easier to undelete them.

Although it is a bit of a misnomer to call it an undelete file tool, the recycle bin is a great little idea. The recycle bin itself is nothing but a file folder. When you delete a file or shortcut the file is simply moved into the folder marked recycle bin. Attached to the file is the file origination point, meaning what folder did it come from.

When you restore a file from the recycle bin the file is automatically restore to its point of origin. If you highlight a file in the recycle bin, the recycle bin even tells you where that origination point is and when the file was sent to recycle to begin with. With this information you should know if you have the correct file to undelete.

Undelete a file from your desktop is quite different from the need to undelete a file after it has left the desktop recycle bin. Where do you look for the file in order to undelete it? That is a secret the operating system would rather you didn't attempt to know. Instead, makes sure you have an undelete file utility installed on your computer.

Undelete file utility software is not normally a part of your operating system. It is generally supplemental software that you purchase yourself and install. If you are a person who works in a time critical job and needs access to your files all of the time and you are a person who is apt to lose a file from time to time, then you need undelete file software as a matter of course. Purchase and install it before you run into a problem.

Review the undelete file process and practice the retrieving a dummy file. Now that you can retrieve the dummy file you should feel a little better the next time you have an emergency retrieval to perform. Practice makes perfect.

But here is a rule you must always follow in order to raise the odds of finding your files. When you realize you need to undelete a file, stop all other work on your computer. In fact, because of the nature of an operating system just about anything you do on the computer can override your file.
