How Will Using a Debt Management Services Company Affect Your Credit Report?
Determining the effect of using a debt management services company on your credit report depends on the current state of your credit report. Makes sense, doesn't it. If you have sterling credit report but have lots of debt and are just looking for a way out from under it all, your might not actually want to use a debt management services company. But if you're like millions of other Americans who're behind in their payments, have consistently missed payments, or have already defaulted on their payments, using a debt management services company might actually improve your credit score.
That's because most creditors will report accounts as "current" after receiving as few as one to three consecutive payments when arranged and paid through a debt management services agency. But make sure you understand that while enrollment in a debt management services program might actually improve your current credit rating, there's no way it will erase your credit history - only time will do that.
Also be aware that some of your creditors might report that your account is being paid through a debt management services agency, and that this might be considered a derogatory statement of really good credit reports, but it might be viewed in a positive light if your credit reports like delinquent or past-due notices. While some creditors might regard working through a debt management agency as a negative, others see it as an honest and sincere effort on your part to live up to your financial obligations.
How Will Using a Debt Management Services Company Affect Your Financial Life?
Once you start your program and you should, after several months, start to see your credit scores improve, especially if your credit report has some derogatory notices. If you remain in good standing with all your creditors until the programs completion you should definitely see some improvements in this area.
Once the derogatory information is outdated and drops off your reports, and if you're able to maintain a perfect credit record in the meantime, your credit report might actually come to reflect the highest ratings But even without a spotless track record, you'll often be granted credit and financing, although the interest rates and fees will be adjusted accordingly.
How to Get the Most out of Your Debt Management Services Company
Don't expect your debt management company to provide unreasonable services, like cleaning your credit history, or eliminating your debts. And don't expect that they'll do it all for free, even if they're a non-profit organization...even non-profits require funds to operate, and they don't get then from voluntary charitable contributions.
Neither credit counseling nor debt management services agencies report anything to the credit reporting agencies, nor can they have derogatory information contained in your reports removed. The only people that can make reports are your creditors, and you are the only one that can initiate the process of having derogatory information removed, and only then if it's actually inaccurate or outdated.
Credit counseling and debt management services companies deal with hundreds of creditors nationwide on behalf of their clients, and each creditor maintains and administers their own unique set of policies and procedures. The agency whose services you enlist to help provide debt management doesn't have any control over how your creditors report your status to the credit reporting agencies.
