Smelling the Need for File Recovery
It sounds ridiculous to say that one can smell the need for file recovery but it is often the case with experienced computer users.
The Need for File Recovery Does Not Smell Good.
The subtle aroma of burning computer components can instigate the need for file recovery. Heat sinks can fall off during shipping or transportation. Any sort of movement to a PC can cause internal components to move, shift and ultimately become dislodged. Even if this means they are still connected and operable to some degree, loose components can interfere with the smooth running and operation of others and ultimately lead to failure and burnout.
Power surges can cause similar damage, along with a hundred and one other other different sources. And, regardless of how many safeguards are put in place to prevent this kind of accident from happening, these problems continually strike and inevitably cause some degree of file corruption. All too often this problem is first indicated by the pungent smell of something inside the PC burning out. Invariably, this instigates a pressing need for file recovery.
File Recovery is Not the First Step.
In these cases file recovery is not the first that needs to be taken. It is most important to close down the machine as quickly as possible. Then the power supply needs to be disconnected and the machine needs to be checked. If there is any danger of fire or electrical shock these matters should be addressed with suitable precautions by appropriate professionals. There is no file on a computer so important that its safe recovery is worth running the risk of electrocution or personal injury through fire damage.
Usually components burnout quickly and without causing serious damage to their surroundings. However, in the case of any burnout inside a computer there is a grave danger that some file information may have been destroyed or corrupted during the incident. However, before even assessing the need for recovery, there are other steps that need to be taken.
After assuring that the machine is safe to approach, the insides need to be examined and the cause of the burning smell needs to be diagnosed. A computer should never be run if it looks like the CPU has been burned. If the computer is still under warranty it is most sensible to contact the supplier straight away, describe the situation with a technician and discuss your options.
If the computer is no longer under warranty a thorough examination of the machine needs to be made and the cause of the burning smell needs to be diagnosed. Scorch marks on the processor will confirm that some degree of burnout has taken place. The processor will need to be replaced in this instance. More often the cause is an inoperative power supply and this should be replaced by a competent, qualified technician.
File Recovery is the Final Stage.
Even though it smells like disaster, a sensible use of repair, diagnosis and reinstallation can often mean that file recovery is an effective final step in recovery from this problem.
