Credit Card Merchant Accounts for Small Business Owners
A Credit Article Contributed by Kris Griebe
What is a Credit Card Merchant Account?
A credit card merchant account is similar to a bank account in some aspects. What it does is allow your small business to accept credit card payments. Credit card payments can be an important source of revenue, as more and more people shop with their credit card. Being unable to accept these payments not only puts you behind the trend, but it can cost you business as well.
These accounts usually come in the form of a packaged service. This service includes the use (and training for) credit card machines, a merchant account, and processing. When someone makes a credit card purchase using your machine, their information will be sent to the company who your service is through. From there, their information is processed, and the appropriate amount is debited to their card. Then the processing company will take that money and deposit it into your merchant account.
There is a small fee for this service, but it is well worth it because it not only saves you the time of having to do the processing yourself, but it also allows you to accept all sorts of new business.
Do I Really Need a Credit Card Merchant Account for My Business?
Next time you go shopping, pay attention as people check out. How many of them used a credit card? You will probably find that a good percentage of shoppers will use their credit card, especially for big purchases. It is a convenience to them, and not providing that convenience can cost you hundreds of dollars, if not more!
Being able to accept credit cards at your small business gives you the ultimate in flexibility and customer appeal. If someone is out shopping with their credit card, and you do not accept them, they will go right past your store, and on to the next store that does accept credit cards. It is possible to survive in the business world without accepting credit cards, but if you truly want to prosper and grow, you will need to be able to accept credit cards from your customers.
How Do I Get a Credit Card Merchant Account?
You must apply with a merchant service. There are hundreds around, and many ways to find them. The first choice is to search the internet. Go to a search engine, type "credit card merchant account" into the text box, and click the search button. From there, all you have to do is pick which account you think will serve you best.
Another option is to speak to nearby shop owners. If they accept credit cards, they have a merchant account. They may be willing to refer you to the service they use, and possibly get you a discount as well! On top of this, by talking to someone first, you will be able to find out a bit more about the service before you enroll in it.
If this fails, try your local Chamber of Commerce. They will more than likely be able to point you in the right direction. Once you have your service, you can set it up, get the required training, and in no time you will be accepting customer credit cards at your own small business!
