An online credit card is a credit card designed to be used at certain merchants with webpages on the internet. This is not a card you can use at the local supermarket, instead, if you wish to purchase products with it, you must access one of the designated online merchants and find the item you wish to purchase there. The benefit to having an online credit card is that you can often save money shopping online, and you avoid the temptation of going on shopping sprees while on vacation, or something similar.
Online credit cards often will have slightly higher limits than a credit card you can use down the street. Just as you might visit many shops in your city, you can also use an online credit card at a variety of online shops. Almost any item you could wish for can be found at these shops, and they are designed to serve your needs as an online credit card holder.

The company that issues you your online credit card should maintain a list of companies and websites where you can shop using your online credit card. Some online credit cards are accepted at merchants outside of this list. The online merchant pays your credit card company to be allowed to accept payments from their credit cards, thus creating a greater variety and selection for you, the consumer.
If you are unsure of where you can use your credit card, you can contact the customer support team through your credit card company's website and you will be able to ask them for a list of places where you can use your online credit card.
Where Can I Apply for an Online Credit Card?
There are two types of credit card companies that supply online credit cards. The first is the specialized online credit card company. This company offers nothing but online credit cards, able to be used only at merchants on the internet. They do not offer real-world credit cards that you can take with you when you travel. Instead they have dedicated their service to those who often shop online. This is the ideal choice for anyone seeking an online credit card, as these companies will be more knowledgeable in the entire process than those who do not specialize in online credit cards.
The second type of company offers both online credit cards and real-world credit cards. This type of company will tend to know less about the process of using an online credit card, though they will have a wider array of knowledge in the entire credit card process. A benefit to applying with this company is that with a proven track record, you may be able to get a real-world credit card from the same company much easier than if you went out and applied with an entirely new company. Decide what needs you have and you will be started on your way towards getting an online credit card.
