As a Stay-at-Home Mother, How Should I Conduct Debt Management?

Debt management works the same no matter who you are. Granted, as a stay at home mother, you may not have intimate knowledge of every aspect of your family's finances, but that does not mean that you cannot actively participate in the management of the family finances and debt.

Having a family adds extra importance to the proper management of debt, to ensure financial security and flexibility in times of need. The best way to manage debt as a stay-at-home mother is to remain informed and keep accurate records of any financial transaction that takes place within your family. Keeping track of any expenditures will allow you to know exactly where your family's money is going, and allow you to determine how much debt, if any, you have. This will also provide you with the information needed to assess your level of debt, and move towards eliminating it.

Is There Someplace I Can Look for Debt Management Assistance?

Of course! There are any number of websites dedicated to debt management. There are even sites you can join that have tools to aid you in keeping track of your finances and managing your debt. These tools will make it easier for you to keep accurate records, and will also help you decide what steps are needed in order to successfully eliminate or manage your family debt.

How Can My Debt Management Be Successful If I Don't Know What Debts My Family Has?

Well, to put it simply, you can't. You need to find out exactly where the money your family spends goes. Gather up all bills relating to any outstanding debt you have, and inventory them so you know exactly what kind of debt you are looking at. Debt management can seem like a lot of work, but it is really nothing more than simple management of your bills. Keeping an accurate record of money spent and money earned will go a long way towards helping you understand and manage your debts.

The first course of action is to make a simple budget, listing your fixed monthly expenses (rent, utilities, food, etc), as well as any credit card or other debt you are aware of. Next, call a family meeting. Consult with everyone in the family and find out where any other money is being spent. Ask everyone in your family to provide you with a receipt any time they use a credit card.

In addition to keeping you on top of what is being spent this will allow you to compare your receipts against the credit card bill and look for any suspicious charges. Within a few months you'll have a full picture and be on top of your family's debt management.

Being a stay-at-home mother makes you uniquely qualified to manage your family debt. After all, who knows better what the family needs than you?
