In hard drive recovery a shop will do or say almost anything to get your business. In most cases, what they say is true. We are most definitely the best in the business! Can you trust that? Usually you can. You might hear of a turn around time of one to three days, or you don't pay us if we can not recover your data. All of these things are usually a true statement. Computer repair is a very lucrative business. Not too many people will try to cheat you or overcharge you. Prices are up front and fair. If you need hard drive recovery most repair shops will do what they say they can do.
Hard Drive Recovery - the First Step
The first step is usually a lengthy telephone call. At first, you will be asked a series of questions pertaining the the failed hard drive. After that, a determination will be made. Exactly the cause of the problem and what it is. Then, you will have a decision to make. Let the shop repair the failed drive or should you try it yourself. Trying something like this yourself is not usually recommended.
In fact, if it is only some lost files a person can sometimes buy the software and make the recovery at home. If it is a major repair, then you can either drop off the failed drive or mail it. Once it is received, usually the same day you will be told of the cost and how long it will take. The procedure to make the repair is also now known.

A determination must be made, as to whether the problem is due to hardware or a data failure. Once this is determined, then the replacement parts can be identified or if the data can be recovered at all. Usually, most of the data is recoverable. Access to the drive itself must be gained so the data can be checked. Its condition must be evaluated to see just how much of it is usable. The results can now be given to the customer. Approval must be given to continue. If not then your drive will be immediately returned.

Now comes the process of recovery. The hard drive is cloned to prevent any further damage. Sector by sector the data is data is recovered and placed onto another form of media. If the hard drive itself if repairable then your data will be replaced later. If not, you will receive the recovered data and your old hard drive. Lastly, a safeguard is made to keep your data on file until you have restored it to your computer.
Preventative Measures
A lot can be said in the statement, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That is true with almost anything. With computers some plain old common sense should be used. Extra care and plenty of back up should always be used. You can even back up your entire computer, for that matter. However, there is always the possibility of failure not matter what you do.
