Services for the Educational Community
in Hawaii and the Pacific
View PDF of Brochure (2.81M)

Background
Successful schools are critical to our future. Not only is success necessary for meeting the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), well educated young people are better prepared to become “worldclass” citizens – making their lives more fulfilling, strengthening our society, and contributing to our economic future.

Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PREL) understands the requirements set out by NCLB. Our school improvement, professional development, assessment, and research and evaluation services align with these requirements and can be customized to meet the needs of individual clients. Just as importantly, PREL, and its well qualified staff, have been providing schools in Hawaii and across the Pacific with effective research-based support for over 15 years.

School Improvement Planning
For more than a decade, PREL has provided educators
at the state, district, and school levels with technical
assistance and research-based strategies for developing
and implementing school improvement efforts.
Services include:

  • Technology planning.
  • Data driven decision making.
  • Development of school, parent, and community networks in support of improvement.
  • Assistance in the selection of proven and appropriate programs and resources.
  • Curriculum and school environment audits.
  • Large-scale, school-wide, and classroom assessments.
  • Creation of data management systems.
  • Career education programs design.

Professional Development Services
PREL’s professional development programs provide school administrators, teachers, resource specialists, and paraprofessionals with high-quality research-based leadership development and classroom strategies focused on the improvement of teaching and learning. Current professional development service offerings include a range of sessions, from three-hour workshops to college courses (available for graduate and undergraduate credit). Current topics include:

  • Developing reading literacy.
  • Reading and writing across the curriculum.
  • Addressing mathematics and science standards.
  • Engaging all students in the teaching and learning process (culturally inclusive environments and classroom strategies).
  • Questioning and understanding to improve learning and thinking.
  • Assessing in the classroom.
  • Integrating and applying technology.
  • Creating, selecting, and/or using quality online and distance learning resources.
  • Preventing substance abuse and strengthening health education.
  • Improving learning through the arts and humanities.

These services can be tailored to meet the specific needs of the target district or school and can be delivered in a variety of formats including onsite training, video teleconferencing, topical electronic mailing lists, and Web-based systems.

Research and Evaluation Services
PREL has been involved in research and evaluation at the state, regional, and national levels since 1990. The evaluators and researchers on staff are available to assist in the design and implementation of both research and evaluation projects to meet client needs for scientifically based research, including the requirements of NCLB. Research and evaluation services
include:

  • Evaluations (formative and summative) to guide continuing work and meet the requirements of funding agencies.
  • Program and product evaluations.
  • Needs assessments to identify areas of strength and those that need improvement.
  • Reports that provide the appropriate information in user-friendly language.

Production and Delivery Services
PREL has the capacity to collaborate to produce high-quality, customized curriculum and learning resources. PREL can provide this expertise to help your school or district produce learning materials such as:

  • Distance learning courses.
  • Websites.
  • Video and film.
  • Interactive multimedia CD-ROMs and DVDs.

Credit
Graduate and undergraduate credit is available for teachers involved in extended professional development activities. PREL will also work with schools to offer credit through the Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) Professional Development and Educational Research Institute (PDERI) whenever possible.

Costs
The cost of professional development services average $750 per day. Planning, assessment, evaluation, and research services are available at highly competitive rates based on the scope of the project. Estimates will be provided upon request.

PREL receives federal funding to support some of its activities. The cost of services targeted by these projects, currently identified as school communities serving high-needs, at-risk, and underserved populations, are often partially offset by this federal funding.
