STAY IN BUKITTINGGI

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

Grand Hotel, JI. Jen. A. Yani 115, is verypopular and geared to travelers. It costs Rp400 single, Rp900 double with sink, Rp800 double without sink. They know everything about the area; have a look at their guestbook. For information see Mr. Sulaiman or Mr. Yang. Drinks and foods such as eggs and toast are also served. You're awakened each morning by wild sounds of animals from the zoo, starting at 6 am. For something plusher next door is the Chinese-run Yany Hotel; some single rooms for Rp2000, double rooms from Rp1500-3500. Ask them about their annex (Rp500), right on the edge of the canyon, which has a kitchen to do your own cooking (only 2 of the rooms have windows and there's a key for everything). Often all by yourself, sit and watch storms move down the canyon. Hotel Zakiah, also on JI. Jen A. Yani, is a very loose place with police sometimes gambling downstairs. Clean, cheap (Rp800 double), and coffee and tea is served (but not food). During the day all rooms are noisy except the ones in the back, but at night it's very quiet with only the sound of horses' hoofs on the street outside. Don't sit in the back set of chairs on the top floor: they have cane bugs. Opie arranges8 am to 8 pm minibus tours of the lakes, the caves, or anywhere a group wants to go, Rp2000 per person; a good deal. Singgalang Hotel, JI. A. Yani 130, opposite Didi's Restaurant, is Rp400 single, Rp800 double, a breakfast of coffee or tea and bread is free. Buy bus tickets here for Prapat, Lubuklinggai or Jakarta. Hotel Yogya, JI. Prof. M. Yamin 11, charges Rp400 for dingy dorm beds, Rp850 for single rooms, Rp1700 for double rooms; very central, right next to the op/et terminal, but motorycles rev up at 5 am along with the Muslim call( prayer. Losmen Rode Baru, right across from the day market and bus station, is Rp400. Hotel Nirvana, JI. Yani, opposite Hotel Yogya, charges Rp1500 for bed and breakfast.
