Try to place yourself in the position of your neighbors and check of any aspect of your home based business may be a disturbance to them. Will you require the usage of restricted chemicals?

Some hobbies turned into a home based business are directly linked with chemicals like glue, spirit, paint, for which your city may have set a limitation in the quantity you are allowed to own in your house. Businesses dealing with children, such as day-care may also require you to pass a series of aptitude tests.

If you plan on bringing animals to your house for pet-sitting purposes for example, verify if there is a limit and what accommodation needs to be provided to the pets while you take care of them.

Check if there is a maximum square footage that your home based business can use. Don't forget to ask about the outdoors in case you need outside storage space. Will you need frequent deliveries? Some neighborhoods have strict by-laws on regular truck deliveries. Will you require an external sign so people find your house easily? There may be some regulations about the size and location of the outdoor signs too. How about parking? Residential areas may limit the number of parking space per household.

Other Home Based Business Considerations

Are you planning to hire employees in your home based business adventure? Some cities won't allow you to hire more than one or two employees to work in your house. An easy way around that would be to have them come in turn and take some work to their own house. The same may apply to the number of clients that you can have at your house at the same time, although this may be limited to clients coming to you for treatment services such as spa treatments, massage, etc.

In conclusion be very specific with the description of your home based business and think 'long-term' as you may need to expand faster than you expect, which would force you to find some office space, thus defeating the purpose of... a home based business.
