What is Backup Exec?

Network backup solutions for larger enterprises can require a product like Backup Exec. The backup time required of ever growing data put some companies in a category of business that requires specialize software. Ever growing data can stress an enterprise in areas of recovery time frame, storage capacity, and bandwidth. Backup Exec assists larger companies in making sure their backups are complete and error free.

The Backup Exec Package

Backup Exec comes as a series of product suites designed with backup and recovery in mind. Data can be run through an offline backup. The product includes the ability to backup a server running Windows, Novell Netware, of Linux operating systems. Server suite software allows a server to recover to the most recent backup whether it is full, incremental, or differential.

Other software products within the suite of Backup Exec include a SAN suite. The SAN suite allows for data protection options required when backup and recovery is occurring in a SAN environment. Data being shared on a disk array is automatically protected through one or many tape libraries.

When dealing with a multi drive tape library, Backup Exec adds its own performance enhancements. Windows and Netware platforms have RAID stripping and mirroring available to them. Unlimited tape drives, libraries, and auto loaders are also supported with Backup Exec.

The Backup Exec Enhancements

Backup Exec offers some enhancements with their Backup Exec Suite Software. Backups happen simultaneously and invisibly while users are working with files and applications. The user will never know a Backup Exec is completing a job in the background. Backup Exec also is fast and secure protection for Exchange, SQL, Oracle, and Lotus Notes. Transparent data protection provides 24/7 uninterrupted backup and data consistency.

The Backup Exec program provides a Microsoft SQL agent, Microsoft Exchange agent, a Windows Notes/Domino agent, a Windows Oracle agent, a Windows Open File Option, a Netware Oracle agent, and a Netware Open File Option. Options are used in conjunction with a database agent. These Backup Exec enhancements protect your data while it is open and online.

Backup Exec Target Environments

Backup Exec has a suite of products to choose from. Each suite is targeted for use by a specific environment. These environments run the gamut from medium to large size enterprises. A customer ideally suited to the Backup Exec product line usually requires a high level of availability of their data. They will also require a quick and easy data recovery and data restore process if failure occurs. The desire for increased backup performance allowing for great speed and continued user accessibility would be an area Backup Exec excels in.

The suite of products that Backup Exec encompasses is made especially for enterprises that have a multi-drive tape library or are planning to install one in the near future.

A remote server pack is also available for users needing to backup remote servers. This additional package can assist in optimizing backup performance and enable cross-platform-backup to a primary master server.
