A small business by definition is a business that employs under 100 people. This also includes home businesses. Small Business makes up at least one third of businesses overall in the United States. The association that is most helpful to small businesses is the Small Business Association, or SBA. They have offices in all the 50 states and are also located on the internet at www.sba.gov.

If you are even thinking about opening or starting a small business, your first step would be to either call, write or email your local SBA office. Their website has plenty of information about who they are and what they do. SBA gives advice, loans, and generally will put you on the right track to begin your small business.

The SBA offers a variety of services to the small business owner or prospective owner. The SBA gives advice on starting your business, financing, loans, disaster recovery, managing, and even business opportunities.

Small business is growing at a booming rate. Small has a lot of competition from big business and has to fight hard to stay alive. They face obstacles that most big business will not face and most will fail, due to those obstacles some within a year, others take a bit longer.

First, as always do your homework. Second, find your niche, something only you can do. Do it well. Third, seek out your local Small Business Administration Office and talk with them about prospects, business plans, etc. You will quickly find that the process of researching SBA options will help you a lot in correctly planning and organizing your small business.
