Work at Home, for Better or Worse
A Home Business Article Contributed by Wendy Ledbetter
When Work at Home Isn't Working
It took a tremendous commitment to begin a work at home business, but sometimes things just don't work out as planned. Perhaps the money is not as good as was expected, or the pure tedium of working alone has become too much of a chore. Maybe it's simply that work always seems to take the back burner to everything else - including housework that hasn't been accomplished in ages.
Whatever the problems, it's often the easiest course of action to simply drop the idea and begin searching for a regular job.
Or maybe it's just time to take a step back and reevaluate the business, the goals and the reality.
When Work at Home Isn't Working
When the idea first took root to work at home, it likely seemed like an easy task. After all, your previous employment records are impeccable. You seldom missed work, accomplished assigned tasks and meet deadlines easily.
While the flexibility of working at home is probably one of the things that first drew you to the idea, the reality is that you still have to work. It's incredibly easy to take time for things you would have never considered when you worked outside the home.
Making concrete work hours might be a necessary step to make the work at home business work.
You have to decide whether the goal of the work at home business was to support a family or simply supplement an existing income. Maybe the course you selected hasn't met expectations for that goal. In that case, it might be time to change the course of the business, but not necessarily drop the idea of working at home altogether.
Maybe the problem isn't so much that the business isn't meeting those goals, but that the reality of working at home isn't what you expected. Because you're at the office, 24/7, clients and customers might feel they can call you at any time. Sometimes it's important to leave the office behind - literally and figuratively. Close the door and ignore e-mail and phone calls. After all, if you were working from an office, those clients would have to find time to call you during office hours. Making a little time for yourself is allowed and often necessary to retain peace of mind.
Work at Home - the Commitment
When the work at home idea first became a reality, there was likely an excitement that kept you going for awhile. Now that the idea has become work, it's would be easy to say you gave it a try and simply walk away. But maybe you simply need to breath some new life into the job.
First, remember that you weren't always happy with a job in the office or factory. There were negatives in those situations too. Make a list of the things you disliked - waking to an alarm and rushing to arrive on time or dealing with an annoying coworker. Then make a list of what's wrong with the current situation and compare the two. Most likely you'll find that the commitment to work at home is worth another try.
