Your Small Business is More Than Your Software

Are You Spending Too Much Time, Energy or Money on Small Business Software

Unless your small business is run online, your choice of software to use is not as important as some small business owners make it out to be. An ecommerce business which is run from a website is the exception to this statement. Obviously, if your small business is run entirely or mostly from your computer, then your software is much more integral to your business.

However, if you are running a brick and mortar small business where your primary source of income is coming from customers in the "real world" not the "virtual world"; then although you need to spend some time selecting and choosing small business software, getting too hung up on this aspect of your business can lead to failure.

Time Spent Choosing and Using Small Business Software May Not Be Time Spent Making Sales

I knew a small business owner once who had this exact problem. He ran a small business servicing accounts within a fifty mile radius of his home based small business. Before he computerized his business with software he spent the minimal amount of time required keeping books and the maximum amount of time servicing his existing accounts and soliciting new ones. But his hobby was always computers.

When computers became more popular and necessary to small business, he purchased small business software and started keeping his business records on the computer. But before you know it, he found the software did not meet his needs are started trying to write his own software.

His obsession with the software for his small business, which was probably fueled because his true passion was computers not the service his business was providing which was generating his income, took up most of his time. His quality of service to his accounts suffered from the lack of attention and time they were being given and he stopped soliciting new accounts.

Now, years later, he has finally put his small business on the market in hopes to sell it before he has lost all of his accounts. How did a growing successful small business get so side tracked? Because all of these years later the small business owner is still on a time consuming quest for software.

Use Software for Your Small Business, but Do Not Let It Use You

Wherever your business income comes from is where the small business owner needs to stay focused. If your income comes from sales, then sales needs to be your primary focus, if your income is from service, then service to your customers must always come first. This is not to say that there is not a place for software in the running of your small business.

But unless the software is some how connected to the income generated by the business, it is important not to let it become so time consuming that no one has time to do business. If your small business software is complicated and not user friendly consider a switch to something that will require less time and maintenance.
