Getting Kalimantan

Some of the TOP Hotels in Bali

Bali's most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation, shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged every night of the week and the streets are full of arts-and-crafts galleries.

Take a Pelni boat from Surabaya, East Java for Rp8500, leaving weekly for the east coast, and Banjarmasin on the south coast. From Pare Pare or Ujung Pandang, South Celebes, take a kapal motor to one of the cities on the east coast, leaving frequently, about Rp3-4000. From Singapore, Straits Steamship Company, Ocean Bldg. 1, 16th floor, has ships to: Kota Kinabalu S$97 deck class, Sandakan S6112 deck class, Kucing S$92, Tawau or Lahad Datu S$220, first class only. From any of these towns in East Malaysia (northern Borneo) you can travel down into Indonesian territory by kapal motor, coasters or on foot. Most of these approaches from East Malays/a require extensive river trips, some using a combination of hiking and 4-wheel drive vehicles.from Tawau: There are boats to Nunukan, East Kalimantan, for Rp2000, then travel down the East coast of Kalimantan by coasters. from Miri, Sarawak: Take the riverboat upriver than trek overland into Kalimantan. from Kota Kinabalu: Do the overland trip first to Keningau by taxi 4 hours 160 km for M$17 per seat on a Landrover, then on to Pensiangan. Or take a taxi from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan 400 km 10 hours for M$25. Or fly direct to Tawau, 5 flights a week M651. from Lahad Datu: Take a taxi 160 km to Tawau, M$25, 4 hours. from Sandakan: By air first to Lahad Datu (only on Fri.), M628, then take a taxi to Tawau. from Kucing: Take the airconditioned express-launch Mas Jaya for M$20, 8 hours to Sibu then take another launch to Kapit, M$7.50, 4 hours. From Kapit hire a longboat into Kalimantan territory, ending up about 20 km from Longnawan. This approach through Sarawak is like an Audobon wildlife documentary film; marvelous. Longhouses are all along the way. Eat on the jettys of the river towns.
