The Impact of a Small Business Grant

Assuming that small business grants were widely available, they would still have the effect of having both a positive and negative impact on many home based businesses. Many entrepreneurs would be forgiven for assuming that a grant would have only a positive impact and nothing negative.

Small Business Grants Can Take Away the Passion

On a negative note, looking at some of the most successful home based small businesses that have taken off, they were all based on a passion. The burning passion of the founder or founders. Take Apple Computers which was started in a small back yard garage by Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak with little else than their passion for tinkering with computers. Steve Jobs' passion meant that he had this impossible-sounding-dream of having a computer in every home.

Many entrepreneurs start by thinking that they have a passion over something. The initial financial hurdles quickly proves them wrong. Financial obstacles are an ideal way to test a person's passion. The degree of the passion makes the enterprise more than just a business and quickly drives it to heights of success that amaze everybody who sees the business' initial humble beginnings.

Assuming that small business grants were as widely available as the hype suggests, they would take away the passion from small business. The whole scenario would then be reduced to who can attract the grants rather than who has the deepest passion to succeed. This would effectively take away the driving engine behind small home based businesses.

Less Work Would Go into the Initial Idea

The result would be that much less work would go into the initial concept or idea for the small business. When funds and resources are limited, people tend to take more time and care selecting ideas, knowing very well that if they choose the wrong idea, it is unlikely that they will get a second chance to correct the situation. At least not in a long time.

Small Business Grants Would Change the Face of Home Business

On a positive note, there is no denying that small business grants can change the face of a home business.

It is very rare for a grant to finance 100% of the cost or funds required. In majority of the cases the grant will only cover 15 to 50% of the cost and will only be given when the small business proves that they are able to raise the balance.

Thus a grant can help ease the burden of a small business loan in that a huge chunk of the initial capital will not have to be paid back.

A Small Business Grant Would Give a Business More Time to Get Profitable

This may be just what a small home based business requires to take off and become a success. There is no denying the fact that loans often force many home based businesses to carry a huge burden which more often than not ends up with them crumbling under the pressure.

So in effect a small business grant would give a business more time to become profitable.
