How to Prepare to Work at Home
A Home Business Article Contributed by Megan Cohen
Choosing to Work at Home.
Making the decision to work at home may sound easy. After all, what could be better than earning a living in your pajamas with a flexible schedule and without a pesky, boring commute, endless, frustrating meetings and a boss who is less intelligent than you? As many beginning entrepreneurs discover, doing their work from home is more complicated than it sounds. It means navigating a whole new kind of business terrain.
Work at home can be much more rewarding, but it can be less rewarding in some ways as well. There is no corporate structure to support you, so when you're struggling only you can give yourself a pep talk, and when you do a great job only you can pat yourself on the back. Before you decide to start working at home, it's important that you honestly consider the difficulties that being your own boss can bring you face to face with.
Now That You've Chosen to Work at Home.
Start by celebrating! In the Jewish tradition, after young people have read from the Torah for the first time, they are rewarded with a spoonful of honey or another tasty treat. This teaches them that knowledge is sweet, and that learning will bring them many rewards throughout their lives. Borrow a bit of this tradition and celebrate your first move towards your new lifestyle. Go out for dinner, or buy yourself a small present.
After all, if you start your business with a positive attitude and the pleasurable feeling that your new work at home lifestyle will bring you many gifts, both tangible and intangible, you will feel ready to commit to the lifestyle you've just chosen. So, go to the beach in the middle of a workday! Take your spouse out for lunch! Enjoy the perks that you've earned by making a strong decision to take charge of your career and seize opportunities.
Set up a Space to Work at Home.
When your living space and your working space are the same, it can be hard to stay motivated. After all, doing your taxes will be hard enough -- imagine how much harder it will be to knuckle down and fill out forms if you're right in front of your television! Find a place in your home which you can designate as your work space. An ideal work space has natural light, privacy and quiet.
However, whatever your living situation you can find a corner of the room where you can concentrate on your work without distraction. If you're in a one-room apartment or if your office is in your bedroom, consider investing in a free-standing screen to section off your work space. One of the biggest challenges you'll face working at home is drawing boundaries around your work life so that it doesn't spill over into the quality time you've earned with your family, friends and in peaceful solitude
You will find that you work better if you can't see your bed from your desk, and you'll certainly sleep better if your computer isn't staring you in the face!
