A home based business is a work opportunity to work at home with your own business. This is a business opportunity that is done at the home. There are many such opportunities out there. The internet, magazines especially geared for home based business opportunity, advertisements in the backs of magazines under the Employment section. They also can be found on little posters or cards that are sent through the mail or posted on community bulletin boards, or even college bulletin boards.
The ways of finding such opportunity are varied and also endless. You can also get letters in the mail about stuffing envelopes, or find such things in the newspaper in the work wanted or employment section of the newspaper. The list is endless.

A home based business, like everything else does have con artists and rip offs. These you need to avoid. How do you avoid them? Simply by doing some homework on the home based business opportunity. This means checking the opportunity out in every way. Ask for references and talk to those references. Don't make any snap decisions, nor let yourself be pressured into anything that you do not want. Talk to the people that are offering this home based business opportunity.
If they evade any questions, then that particular home based business is not for you. Read the contracts carefully. Read the fine print. Other points to look out for are p.o. boxes, addresses with no telephone numbers, no return address if you have been mailed something. Also please use your common sense. Anything that screams that you can make 10, 000 a day or more is not very realistic. Really think about the claims that are made for some of these home based business opportunities.
If they are realistic then fine, go for it. If not, then steer clear because it is likely a scam or a rip off in progress.
What Do I Need to Know about Setting up the Home Based Business?
Home based business is just the same as a regular business. First you register yourself and your business with Federal State and local authorities, and obtaining and business licenses that you may need. Also check with the local zoning, as some places such as apartments will not let you have a business on their property. Also check on the Federal, state and local rules about busineses, whether sole proprietorship or corporation for those brave souls that wish that route.
Also include the IRS and make certain that you keep you records and books up to date. A CPA will be helpful. Also have business accounts for everything, six months of living expense cash to live on while you begin your home based business. Business plans and budgets are also required. The Small Business Administration also will be of help in starting your home based business.
