Medical Alarm System Basics

A medical alarm system is a personal emergency response system which is designed to let a disabled person or an older person living alone to summon help in an emergency. The medical alarm system is especially useful to people who are blind, can not hear, or can not speak or understand English but are in need of medical care.

The three basic components of a medical alarm system are:

1) A wireless personal medical alarm with a push button and worn by the user - the most popular medical alarm styles are bracelet and pendant style alarms;

2) A console that receives the signal that the medical alarm has been activated and then sends a signal to the emergency monitoring center;

3) The emergency monitoring center where a emergency response operator is available twenty four hours a day.

The operator will establish a two way voice contact with the user and dispatch the proper assistance in the form of emergency or medical services, and/or information to the designated relative or friend of the medical alarm system user.

The medical alarm system can be rented, leased or purchased depending on the company one chooses to subscribe with. The conditional cost of a medical alarm system varies from company to company, but many require the payment for the equipment, either as a purchase price or as a monthly rental or lease fee, plus the installation and a monthly monitoring fee, which ranges from $15 to $50.

Many auto dialers allow for voice messages which are pre-recorded and played to the emergency contacts in case the user is unconscious, suffering a heart attack, or is not able to communicate for some or the other reason.
