Military Information

Effective in June 1997, Alaska adopted a military extension policy that states that your non-commercial driver license is valid for 90 days after discharge or return to the state of Alaska, whichever occurs first.  As long as you are on active duty, your Alaska non-commercial  license is valid.   Commercial license's must be renewed every 5 years, either by mail or in person.

Alaska residents are eligible to renew through the mail one time in a 10 year period.  You must keep your address current in order to receive the renewal.  For this purpose, you may wish to renew in person when you are in Alaska so that you will be eligible to renew through the mail if you are stationed overseas at a later time and would prefer to have a current license.   Please keep in mind that renewals are printed a few months in advance of the expiration date, therefore, it is best to advise us as soon as possible after you have moved.  Filling out a change of address card with the post office will not change your information in our system.  If you feel you are eligible to renew through the mail and did not receive a notice, please send your legal name, date of birth and current address to us in an e-mailA duplicate renewal notice will be mailed to you.

PLEASE do not include your social security number or driver license number as e-mail is not a secure site.

ALASKA STATUTE:  SEC. 28.15.101.
EXPIRATION AND RENEWAL OF DRIVER'S LICENSE.

(a) Except as otherwise provided in this chapter, a driver’s license expires on the licensee’s birthday in the fifth year following issuance of the license. A license may be renewed within one year of its expiration upon proper application, payment of the required fee, and except when a license is renewed under (c) of this section, successful completion of a test of the licensee’s eyesight.  (b) The department may defer the expiration of the driver’s license of a person who is outside the state under terms and conditions that the department shall prescribe by regulation.

ALASKA REGULATION:  13 AAC 08.335.
DRIVER LICENSE RENEWAL EXTENSION FOR ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY PERSONNEL.

Except as otherwise provided in this chapter, a non-commercial driver’s license issued under this chapter to a person who is an active duty member of the United States armed forces and stationed outside the state expires upon the earlier of the following dates: 90 days after discharge from active duty of the United States armed forces; or 90 days after the person’s return to the state. (Eff. 6/15/97, Register 142)

If you feel you need something else in addition to the information above, a laminated card is available to active duty military personnel that can be carried with your expired Alaska license. If your license is going to expire soon and you would like a military extension card, please send your request via e-mail.  Please send your current mailing address as well as your name and expiration date as shown on your most current Alaska license.

For military dependents, the license can be renewed one time through the mail provided the last  renewal was done in person.  In addition, an extension letter can be sent to extend the license up to one year past the expiration date of the most current license.  Some states require military dependents to change their license to the state they are residing in.  Please check with the office nearest you to obtain this information.
