Transportation

The Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs' Transportation Affairs division (EB/TRA) is devoted to providing the fullest possible support to the U.S. global transportation industry, vital to the prosperity and security of Americans and citizens of every nation around the world. EB/TRA has two offices: the Office of Aviation Negotiations (AN) and the Office of Transportation Policy (OTP). Our goal is to create a world-wide transportation system that is open, efficient, secure and safe for the rapid and economical movement of people and goods.

EB/TRA aggressively promotes liberalization of safe and secure air and sea transportation to spur economic development, and expand opportunities for U.S. firms, jobs for U.S. workers and benefits for U.S. consumers. EB/TRA leads U.S. teams negotiating Open Skies and other aviation liberalization agreements with nations around the globe. EB/TRA also works closely with the Departments of Transportation, Commerce, Homeland Security, Defense and others, foreign governments, international organizations, and the private sector to protect vital transportation infrastructure, ensuring the safety of the people and products that use them.

EB/TRA routinely deals with the U.S. Department of Transportation, and provides advice to the Secretary of Transportation on overall foreign policy concerns as well as on specific negotiations. The Office also works closely with the National Economic Council. EB/TRA also oversees maritime and land transport policy activities, working closely with the Maritime Administration and the Federal Maritime Commission.
