Terrorists and Terrorism

The war on terror begins with the al-Qaida network, which was responsible for the September 11 attacks, but the war will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped, and defeated. But there are other terrorist organizations without global reach whose activities are as abhorrent as those who can reach the far corners of the earth. The war on terrorism came to the forefront of public awareness as a result of the 9/11 attacks, but the United States has long been in the forefront of efforts to counter terrorism at all levels.

The Department of State's Counterterrorism Office coordinates all U.S. Government efforts to improve counterterrorism cooperation with foreign governments. The Coordinator chairs the Interagency Working Group on Counterterrorism and the State Department's terrorism task forces to coordinate responses to major international terrorist incidents that are in progress. The Coordinator has primary responsibility for developing, coordinating, and implementing American counterterrorism policy, and information from that office is available through the link above or at left.  Information from other sources is presented here when appropriate, as follows:
