Alaska Licenses Issued without a Social Security Number

In June of 2001 the Division of Motor Vehicles began issuing driver licenses without printing the applicants social security number. This applies to State Identification cards as well.  This action is due to a Federal law about the display of Social Security Numbers. 

Please be aware that although the number is not printed on the license, permit or identification card, the social security number is still collected on the application for a permit or license.

The license without the social security number is a valid license.  A small percentage of people have experienced problems with these licenses being accepted as valid. Unfortunately many retail businesses rely on reference guides that are updated only once a year. These guides do not include any changes that may take place during the year the guide is in circulation.

If you experience a problem, you may use this letter as an explanation for whoever is questioning the validity of the license.
