Does Your Small Business Need a Web Site?

The 2000s Have Made Many Small Business Owners Wonder If They Should Have a Web Site

If your small business was around before the dot com era, it might not have a web site. When the Internet first became popular, many small business owners were already established doing business locally and didn't see any need to build a business web site.

Those small businesses, that were selling goods that were easily shippable, saw doors open for them with the introduction of the Internet. Realizing the possibility for a global customer market, these small business owners were quick to build a web site and take their small business into the virtual world or very real sales available online.

Whether or not your small business should have a web site depends very much on the nature of your individual small business. However, even if your small business provides a service and your customers are limited to a certain geographic area, a web site can be beneficial for other reasons.

Your Small Business Web Site Can Be a Form of Communication to Your Customers

You might want to use a small business web site for a communication tool with your existing customers. On your web site, you can post your hours of operation, introduce you staff, advertise current specials and more.

Your web site can also be an information source for your customers regarding your industry. Say for example you own a pet sitting service. Through your web site you can inform your customers about animal health care issues, training program, and other information that animal owners would find beneficial and informative. You can also provide links to sites such as the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or a Nationwide Pet Adoption program.

In addition to communicating information to your current customers, whether your small business is looking to recruit customers nationally or locally, your web site is a good place for your advertisements to send prospective customers so that they can learn more about your business' goods and services.

However, If Your Source of Income is Not Online, Don't Spend All of Your Time Developing a Small Business Web Site

There were some established small businesses that became casualties of the Internet. This typically happened when owner of the small business did not have any knowledge of computers or the Internet, and his means of making money was not on the computer or on the Internet. This small business owner got "bogged down" with having to have a web site for his small business (even though he wasn't quite sure why).

The business owner spent so much of his work time and energy trying to develop an online appearance for his offline business. As a result, he fell behind with his business responsibilities. Those who were not lucky enough to realize this quickly and get back on track with their small business, became victims of the dot com era and their small, local, offline business went out of business.
