Is It Wise to Let a Hobby Lead to a Business Opportunity?

Time and time again you will hear that the best way to choose a business opportunity is to let your hobbies and interests lead you there. This sounds like a pretty solid idea, especially when you consider that owning a business opportunity usually leads to 60 hour work weeks. If you are going to be spending that much time growing a business opportunity, the ideal mix would have you doing work that you are interested in and enjoy.

While it is true that a business opportunity which is grown from the business owner's passions has a much higher success rate, you don't often hear talk of what effect the business opportunity has on the passion.

What Happens to That Hobby If It Leads to a Business Opportunity?

Is a hobby as much fun, or a passion as strong, if it leads to a business opportunity? Or does the thrill and excitement, or the sense of satisfaction and fulfillment, that you were once getting from that activity fade away once it is your source of income?

This question can be answered by many people by looking back at their job history. Did you choose a job that was an extension of your hobby? If so - how did that effect your hobby?

It is not uncommon for our job and career choices to be made, often early in life, based on those things we enjoy doing. That is great, but since our interests and enjoyments keep changing during our lives, often what is a good fit now is not necessarily a good fit forever. That is why many people today change careers three or four times during their working years. Often when the career changes, we are no longer interested in that type of activity even as hobby.

Would the hobby interest have lasted our whole life had it not lead to a job or business opportunity choice? Did turning a hobby into an income kill the hobby? Probably not, most of us switch hobbies throughout our lives too. Again, because what we enjoy doing now is not necessarily what we will enjoy forever.

* So If a Hobby Will Probably Fade Away Any Way, and If You Enjoy Doing It Now, Why Not Let It Lead to a Business Opportunity?

Exactly! As the saying goes "strike while the iron is hot". Often this is used when referring to a market need. Identifying a need and meeting it quickly while it still exists. However, this is also a good analogy to use when accessing your own passions and talents that could lead to a business opportunity.

If you enjoy doing it NOW, you have a passion for it NOW, you are talented at it NOW, and there is a reasonable market demand for it NOW then take advantage of that opportunity!

If you can have a lucrative business grown off of one of your passions for NOW you are among one of a limited group of lucky business owners. When your passions and hobbies change LATER one of them could very well lead to your next business opportunity.
