A Mesothelioma (Asbestos Cancer) Support Group - What It Can Really Do

Many times, we may ask ourselves this question; what could a mere support group do when the enemy is big and ugly as mesothelioma (asbestos cancer)? Well, do not let the phrase 'support group' fool you. These guys can take an ugly beast like mesothelioma (asbestos cancer) head-on and smack it right in the face! In another article, we had talked about Mae and her dedication to fighting against mesothelioma (asbestos cancer). Mae is not one solitary individual.

There are possibly millions of Mae's across the length and breadth of America, taking a stand against mesothelioma (asbestos cancer) and also helping patients to stand against it too.

When Mesothelioma (Asbestos Cancer) Lost - Terence's Tale

Terence is now in his 50s. He too was a worker in an industrial plant, and suffers from mesothelioma (asbestos cancer) due to over-exposure to asbestos at his work environment. Terence lost his brother to the same fatal enemy a year ago. Terence was initially devastated to hear that he had mesothelioma (asbestos cancer); his brother had been diagnosed with the same disease about two years prior to this, and had succumbed eventually.

The period during the tests and prior to the actual confirmation were the worst times in my life", says Terence. The uncertainty of not knowing whether he had it or not took his toll. Add to it the fact that Terence had no supporting family to fall back on. His brother, his only near family member, had passed away a year ago. One can only imagine the hell that Terence went through. But, in his own words, "The agony lasted only till the confirmation of mesothelioma (asbestos cancer).

After the diagnosis, there was disappointment, and a sense of doom, yes, but at least the sleepless nights wondering what was going on, with no one to turn back to, were over. My reaction after the initial moments were, 'fine I have this monster within me', now I got to fight it."

Terence soon found out about a support group for mesothelioma (asbestos cancer) patients, and got in touch with them. "The folks in the group were not sympathetic, because sympathy is the last thing we need", says Terence. They were very supportive to him, and still are. Terence is still hanging in there, the encouragement and strength that he draws from his fellow group members have helped him become stronger.

I am afraid of what this thing can do to me, of what it is doing to me. But I am not scared of it. I know that some day it might finally get me. But until it does, I intend to dedicate all my time to raising awareness about it, meeting fellow patients, and ensuring that the battle rages on.

The Punching Power of a Mesothelioma (Asbestos Cancer) Support Group

Support groups help in various other ways, besides providing encouragement and information to the patients and the public respectively. One of the major areas that they help in are in fund-raising for mesothelioma (asbestos cancer) research. Never underestimate the power of the small, they say. In this fight against mesothelioma, the contributions of the support groups cannot be ignored.
