Columbus Day Party Theme”In 1492 Columbus Sailed the ocean blue,” so the song goes. Christopher Columbus is the Italian explorer, who under the Spanish flag discovered the Americas. Columbus was a chart maker because of this he became convinced that the world is spherical, round instead of flat. This belief later became the basis for his quest of finding a shorter route to Asia. That was Columbus’s purpose to find a short trade route to Asia. He was correct in his assumption of the earth being round, but he had no idea there was this large mass of two continents in blocking his path. The first recorded celebration of Columbus Day in the United States took place on October 12, 1792. Organized by The Society of St. Tammany, also known as the Columbian Order, it commemorated the 300th anniversary of Columbus's landing. Since 1971 Columbus Day, designated as the second Monday in October, has been celebrated as a federal holiday. In many locations across the country Americans parade in commemoration of the day. The 12 days of Christmas, the bright fires, the Yule log, the giving of gifts, carnivals (parades) with floats, carolers who sing while going from house to house, the holiday feasts, and the church processions can all be traced back to the early Mesopotamians. In the Western world, the birthday of Jesus Christ has been celebrated on December 25th since AD 354, replacing an earlier date of January 6th. Joseph and Mary left Nazareth and traveled to Bethlehem, the birth place of King David. The Roman Emperor, Augustus, wanting to know the size of the population of his empire, had ordered a census to be taken. The Governor issued orders that all Jews should register their names in their ancestral home town. Joseph set out for Bethlehem on foot, leading a donkey on which sat Mary. They traveled peacefully for 4-5 days. When they reached Bethlehem, the town and the local inn were crowded with visitors. They took shelter in a manger and that is where Jesus was born. Thanksgiving Party Theme The pilgrims were apart of the Puritan movement in England during the 17th century. They were persecuted for their religious beliefs and decide to go to the Americas to create a “shining city on a hill.” When the Pilgrims crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1620, they landed on the rocky shores of a territory that was inhabited by the Wampanoag Indians. The Wampanoag were part of the Algonquian-speaking peoples. One year later The Pilgrims were not in good condition. They were living in dirt-covered shelters, there was a shortage of food, and nearly half of them had died during the winter. The Wampanoag gave the Pilgrims the help they need. By spring the settlement was doing much better. They gave a feast in thanks of their survival and for the Wampanoag who taught them how to live in the harsh conditions. The Pilgrims learned how to cultivate corn and other new vegetables and how to build Indian-style houses. For three days the Wampanoag feasted with the Pilgrims. It was a special time of friendship between two very different groups of people. A peace and friendship agreement was made between Massasoit the Wampanoag chief and Miles Standish the puritan governor. Halloween Party ThemeHalloween is celebrated annually, October 31. Just think about a bunch of frightening fantasies and the scary stories featuring ghosts, witches, monsters, and all things that go bump in the night then your thinking about one of the finest holidays of the year. "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year. the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife. The Celts believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living. “Trick or treat” is innocent fun to relish on the Halloween Day. It comes from the catholic tradition of eating and giving soul cakes on Halloween. The Jack-o-lantern custom comes from Irish folklore. Wearing costumes comes from the days when Celtic villagers would dress up in ghoulish costumes and noisily paraded around , being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess. Hanukkah Party ThemeHanukkah is celebrated for eight days and nights, starting on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar (which is November-December on the Gregorian calendar). In Hebrew, the word "Hanukkah" means "dedication." It is the story of the Maccabees, a small band of Jewish fighters who liberated the Land of Israel from the Syrian Greeks who occupied it. Under the reign of Antiochus IV
Epiphanies, the Syrian Greeks sought to impose their Hellenistic culture. In remembrance of the liberation, a candle is lit each of the eight days of Hanukkah. Children receive gifts of
Gelt (in remembrance of the coins minted by the new independent Maccabee state) or money and play games of
Dreidel (a spinning four-sided top.) The tradition of receiving a gift on each of the eight days of Hanukkah is fairly recent. Since Christians exchange gifts at Christmas, Jews have come to exchange gifts other than coins at Hanukkah, which comes at the same time of the year. The traditional foods consumed during the Hanukkah holiday are symbolic of the events being celebrated. Most are fried in oil, symbolic of the oil that lasted eight days. Latkes were originally symbolic of the cheesecakes served by the widow Judith, and later evolved to the potato/vegetable fried latkes most known today.
