Columbus Day Party Theme

”In 1492 Columbus Sailed the ocean blue,” so the song goes. Christopher Columbus is the Italian explorer, who under the Spanish flag discovered the Americas. Columbus was a chart maker because of this he became convinced that the world is spherical, round instead of flat. This belief later became the basis for his quest of finding a shorter route to Asia. That was Columbus’s purpose to find a short trade route to Asia. He was correct in his assumption of the earth being round, but he had no idea there was this large mass of two continents in blocking his path. The first recorded celebration of Columbus Day in the United States took place on October 12, 1792.  Organized by The Society of St. Tammany, also known as the Columbian Order, it commemorated the 300th anniversary of Columbus's landing. Since 1971 Columbus Day, designated as the second Monday in October, has been celebrated as a federal holiday. In many locations across the country Americans parade in commemoration of the day. The history of Christmas dates back over 4000 years. Many of our Christmas traditions were celebrated centuries before the Christ child was born . The Roman Emperor, Augustus, wanting to know the size of the population of his empire, had ordered a census to be taken. The Governor issued orders that all Jews should register their names in their ancestral home town. Joseph set out for Bethlehem on foot, leading a donkey on which sat Mary. They traveled peacefully for 4-5 days. When they reached Bethlehem, the town and the local inn were crowded with visitors. They took shelter in a manger and that is where Jesus was born. Thanksgiving Party Theme

The pilgrims were apart of the Puritan movement in England during the 17th century. They were persecuted for their religious beliefs and decide to go to the Americas to create a “shining city on a hill.” When the Pilgrims crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1620, they landed on the rocky shores of a territory that was inhabited by the Wampanoag Indians. The Wampanoag were part of the Algonquian-speaking peoples. One year later The Pilgrims were not in good condition. They were living in dirt-covered shelters, there was a shortage of food, and nearly half of them had died during the winter. The Wampanoag gave the Pilgrims the help they need. By spring the settlement was doing much better. They gave a feast in thanks of their survival and for the Wampanoag who taught them how to live in the harsh conditions. The Pilgrims learned how to cultivate corn and other new vegetables and how to build Indian-style houses. For three days the Wampanoag feasted with the Pilgrims. It was a special time of friendship between two very different groups of people. A peace and friendship agreement was made between Massasoit the Wampanoag chief and Miles Standish the puritan governor. Halloween is celebrated annually, October 31. Just think about a bunch of frightening fantasies and the scary stories featuring ghosts, witches, monsters, and all things that go bump in the night then your thinking about one of the finest holidays of the year. "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year. the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife. The Celts believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living. “Trick or treat” is innocent fun to relish on the Halloween Day. It comes from the catholic tradition of eating and giving soul cakes on Halloween. The Jack-o-lantern custom comes from Irish folklore. Wearing costumes comes from the days when Celtic villagers would dress up in ghoulish costumes and noisily paraded around , being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess. Hanukkah Party Theme

Hanukkah is celebrated for eight days and nights, starting on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar (which is November-December on the Gregorian calendar). In Hebrew, the word "Hanukkah" means "dedication." It is the story of the Maccabees, a small band of Jewish fighters who liberated the Land of Israel from the Syrian Greeks who occupied it. Under the reign of Antiochus IV Epiphanies, the Syrian Greeks sought to impose their Hellenistic culture. In remembrance of the liberation, a candle is lit each of the eight days of Hanukkah. Children receive gifts of Gelt (in remembrance of the coins minted by the new independent Maccabee state) or money and play games of Dreidel (a spinning four-sided top.) The tradition of receiving a gift on each of the eight days of Hanukkah is fairly recent. Since Christians exchange gifts at Christmas, Jews have come to exchange gifts other than coins at Hanukkah, which comes at the same time of the year. The traditional foods consumed during the Hanukkah holiday are symbolic of the events being celebrated. Most are fried in oil, symbolic of the oil that lasted eight days. Latkes were originally symbolic of the cheesecakes served by the widow Judith, and later evolved to the potato/vegetable fried latkes most known today. Lincoln’s Birthday party Theme

The Great Emancipator, Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth President of the United States of America from 1861 to 1865. He was born February 12, 1809. The son of a Kentucky frontiersman, Lincoln had to struggle for a living and for learning. Lincoln never let the world forget that the Civil War involved an even larger issue. This he stated most movingly in dedicating the military cemetery at Gettysburg: "that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain--that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom--and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth. Lincoln thought secession illegal, and was willing to use force to defend Federal law and the Union. When Confederates fired on Fort Sumter, forcing its surrender, he called on the states for 75,000 volunteers. The Civil War had begun. On January 1, 1863, he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy. On Good Friday, April 14, 1865, Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre in Washington by John Wilkes Booth. George Washington Party Theme

The original version of the holiday was in commemoration of George Washington's birthday in 1796 (the last full year of his presidency). George Washington is the first President of the United States of America. He is one of our founding forefathers who battled the British in the American Revolution and won the freedom of our people for all time. In 1968, legislation (HR 15951) was enacted that affected several federal holidays. One of these was Washington's Birthday, the observation of which was shifted to the third Monday in February each year whether or not it fell on the 22nd. Later, Abraham Lincoln, also equally revered and born on February 12th, was also included in the celebration which merged into President's Day and was observed on the third Monday of February. Nicknamed honest Abe, Lincoln once said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure permanently, half slave, half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved. I do not expect the house to fall-but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing, or all the other." Valentine was a priest who served during the 3rd century. February has long been a month of romance. February 14 was a day dedicated to the Roman Goddess Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The celebration featured a lottery in which young men would draw the names of teenage girls from a box. The girl assigned to each young man in that manner would be his companion during the remaining year. Saint Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families; he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine thought this degree injustice. He defied the emperor and performed marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, the Emperor ordered that he be put to death. Valentine sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine had a platonic love for the jailer’s daughter who visited him often during his confinement. Before his death, it is said he wrote her a letter, which he signed “From your Valentine,” an expression we still use today. Cupid, another symbol of the holiday, became associated with it because he was the son of Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty. Cupid often appears on Valentine cards. Ground Hog’s Day Party Theme

Groundhog Day, February 2nd, is a popular tradition in the United States. It is also a legend that has survived centuries, its origins clouded in the mists of time with ancient cultures and animals awakening on specific dates. Myths like Ground Hogs Day tie our present to the past when nature influences our lives. It is the day that the Groundhog comes out of his hole after a long winter sleep to look for his shadow. If he sees it, he regards it as an omen of six more weeks of bad weather and returns to his hole. To our American forefathers, the ground hog was thought of as a most intelligent and sensible animal and therefore the people of Punxsutawney decided that if the sun did appear on February 2nd, so wise an animal as the groundhog would see its shadow and hurry back into its underground home for another six weeks of winter. Punxsutawney Phil (the ground hog who tells the weather) first made his appearance in 1886. During Prohibition Phil threatened to impose 60 weeks of winter on the community if he wasn't allowed a drink. Phil traveled to Washington DC in 1986 to meet with President Reagan. Phil appeared on the Oprah Winfrey show in 1995. Punxsutawney Phil also starred in the Hollywood feature “Ground Hogs Day” opposite Bill Murray. New Years Party Theme

The celebration of the New Year is the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed in ancient Babylon about 4000 years ago. In the years around 2000 BC, the Babylonian New Year began with the first New Moon (actually the first visible crescent) after the Vernal Equinox (first day of spring). The Babylonian New Year celebration lasted for eleven days. Each day had its own particular mode of celebration, but it is safe to say that modern New Year's Eve festivities pale in comparison. Not all countries celebrate New Year at the same time, nor in the same way. This is because people in different parts of the world use different calendars. Long ago, people divided time into days, months, and years. Some calendars are based on the movement of the moon; others are based on the position of the sun. Generally New Years is celebrated December 31- January 1. People stay up all night December 31 to mark the passing of the year. There are elaborate parties with music and dancing. At the stroke of midnight, confetti is tossed in the air, firer crackers explode, and people make noise and then kiss the person next to them.
