You know that you want to work at home, should you start your own home based business or choose a work at home job? Look for either and you will find listings for both ,often treated as if they are interchangeable, but there are some very distinct differences. Not to say that one is better than the other. It really depends on your individual needs.

In a work at home position, just like an away from home job you are at the mercy of your employer, to a certain extent. Your employer will set your rates and determine what tasks you will perform. Your employer will control when and whether or not you advance. While this type of position still affords you much greater freedom than an away from home job, there are limitations. Your employer may also set your hours. With a home based business this is all under your control, based on what is appropriate for your type of business.
A Work at Home Job May Be More Stable Than a Home Based Business.
With the freedom of a home based business also comes the responsibility of providing work for yourself. A work at home job means that the work is provided for you, so you have more of a guaranteed paycheck. Either way it will be up to you to make sure that the work gets done.
A Home Based Business Puts You in Control of Your Income While Work at Home Jobs Provide Security.
Overall you will have to find the work with a home based business, but you also have control over how much work you do. This means that you can increase your income by taking on more projects and more work according to your ability. Work at home jobs may limit the amount of hours or work that you are allowed to do and therefore limit your income. On the other hand, a work at home job normally guarantees that a certain amount of work will be provided for you, and can give you an idea of how much money you will be able to earn.
Many out of the home jobs can be phased into work at home jobs, requiring that you spend part of your time in the office or come in for meetings. If a home based business is more than you are ready to take on and you already have a job that could just as easily be done in your home, talk to your employer about working at home instead. There are many benefits for the employer who allows employees to work at home.
If your employer is not comfortable with this idea, think about sticking to your current field and turning it into a freelance home based business. Offer your services in this capacity to your current employer, but be sure that you are charging appropriately. You will need to charge higher hourly rate when doing freelance work than you would as an in-house employee.
