'Ballad of Jed Clampett' singer dies at 93
LOS ANGELES The man who sang the song that opened each episode of "The Beverly Hillbillies" has died. Jerry Scoggins was 93.Scoggins sang the lyrics to "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" while bluegrass musicians Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs played guitar and banjo.The song and the show were instant hits and aired from 1962 to 1971.Scoggins estimated he had sung "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" more than a thousand times since recording it.Scoggins was also the lead singer of the Cass County Boys. The group worked with Gene Autry and Bing Crosby and made it into the Western Music Hall of Fame in 1996.
