What's News18 February 1999 |
Congratulations to the NSW South Coast Co-operative Library Service Bookmobile who was the 4,500th library to be added to the Gateway on 11 February 1999. |
When adding a link from your site to the Australian Libraries Gateway, why not include the ALG logo? Use the following HTML source code:
For a quicker load time, grab the ALG logo and load it locally. The source code then becomes:
<A HREF="http://www.nla.gov.au/libraries/"><IMG SRC="alglogo.gif" ALT="[Australian Libraries Gateway]" BORDER="0"></A>
'Libraries: Explore and Discover' - Australian Library Week will run this year from 17-23 May. If you would like ALG promotional materials such as stickers, bookmarks, and leaflets for use as part of your ALW activities, please send your request to alg@nla.gov.au or telephone 02 6262 1137. Visit the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) site for more information about the 1999 ALW program - and celebrate!
ALG Administration has had a few enquiries from libraries wanting to mount their catalogue onto the World Wide Web - we suggest libraries wanting to do this check out the list of Australian library suppliers and consultants from the 'For Libraries' section of the Gateway.
As for any suppliers not already listed who would like to be - send your details to alg@nla.gov.au to have a link established.
One of the newest enhancements on the Gateway has been the provision for subject collecting level information. This has made it possible for users to search for libraries with collections on subject of their choice - sorted by collecting level from 'not held' to 'comprehensive'. We have received very positive feedback on this enhancement from both the library community and a broad range of user groups.
In the last What's News we congratulated those libraries who had contributed information about their subject collecting levels on the Gateway and it was very interesting to the see the range of subjects in which these libraries held collections. We would like to encourage all libraries on the Gateway to add subject collecting level information to their entry and/or include comments about the nature of their collection (not searchable but still useful). Tools and information is available to help you and has been developed to support your collection assessment. We have also provided a list of Australian librarians who have assessed their collections - these people can give you advice on how to assess your collection based on their experience.
The key to providing your library's subject collecting information is using the definitions of the collecting levels which were developed in consultation with a wide range of libraries and users. These have been provided to ensure uniform description of Australian library collections. It is more likely that libraries with higher level collections will be called upon more frequently for ILL's and reference enquiries.
In response to requests for information, we have started work on a page for Australian book clubs. Let us know if you have a book or reading club which we can provide a link to - please send an email with an URL or contact email address to alg@nla.gov.au.
