What is Ecommerce?

You've surely heard the talk about the booming world of ecommerce and what it means for businesses. And while you're confident in your knowledge of the term and it's general meaning, you don't have a total handle on exactly where it started and what it is. That's where we come in...keep reading, and you'll learn.

What are the roots of ecommerce?

Approximately 20 years ago, the ever-popular world of ecommerce began. With it's humble roots, it has progressed to one of the biggest business centers in history. In the beginning, businesses used what is now known as ecommerce as a way to exchange information. Primarily the shared information contained order information, order status, delivery information, payment information and other basic facts about their businesses. But, as the technology continued to progress the use of automated teller machines and credit cards also began to pick up momentum and user confidence grew as well.

The next step in the transformation of technology and ecommerce uses began with the world wide web, which created a new age of opportunity by allowing users to gain easy access to a variety of businesses and services. Even though the possibilities were endless, it did take a couple of years for the popularity of the world wide web to catch on and for the general public to realize the vast opportunities just waiting at their finger tips.

What goes up must come down...so is ecommerce on it's way down?

In case you haven't figured this out yet, the internet is not going to go away! As a potential ecommerce business owner, the potential is limitless. The uses and impacts of the internet are bound to continually change and evolve, but the use of the internet as a venue of ecommerce business will remain strong and viable.

Are the benefits of ecommerce limited by the costs associated with a computer and internet access?

The processes which helped establish the growing ecommerce boom have changed through the years, as have the people who have access to it. Initially, the users of ecommerce were limited to a few, but obviously that has changed. The waves of expansion associated with ecommerce can be explained by first, the original connected users. The next wave of expansion of ecommerce will be seen through more people being able to afford computers and other associated costs.

This will be accomplished through lower technology prices and availability. And finally, the third wave of expansion of ecommerce will come as technology continues to expand and new developments are made. Not too long ago, the idea of connecting to the internet through a cell phone seemed absurd, and now, nearly all wireless carriers offer this feature. A feature many of their customer's use regularly.

The next generation of advancements may bring the ability to connect to the internet through broadcast television stations, telephone networks, appliances and who knows what else. As the options continue to increase, the use is ecommerce will continue to grow as well.
