Hard at Work - the Home Business
A Home Business Article Contributed by M. Larose
Work At Home Is Hard Business
Often, people begin a work at home business with the idea that they will not have to work as much in order to get where they want to go. This is not so. When you begin your work at home business make sure you understand the ramifications of working at home. It is not the easiest of situations to work from. You may end knowing that what you had in the traditional work role was far better suited to your personality than what you ended up with at home.
Beginning with some ground rules for yourself and your family once you have made the big leap is advisable. In fact, these ground rules should be discussed before the leap is even made because they can mean a smooth transition to your new home business.
Work At Home Business Rule One
The first ground rule is that work is work and home is home and the two should not interfere with each other during the course of the workday. Interruptions from family members for things that cannot be considered an emergency should just not happen. They wouldn't happen in a traditional work place and they should not happen in a work at home business situation. Designating what is an emergency and what is not is a top priority.
Many people make the change from a traditional work situation to a home situation with the intent of being closer to their families but including them in the process of working will mean you do not get anything accomplished. Being able to have lunch with your children is one thing. Having them interrupt phone conferences or important meetings is another and is completely unacceptable.
Work At Home Business Rule Two
The second ground rule is do not work and watch television or become interested in radio talk shows while you are trying to accomplish some work. None of these mix with a successful work routine. It will interfere, once again, with conference calls or important meetings. Important meetings aside, any meeting of any kind, whether casual or formal, should not have a television or radio blaring in the background. It is unprofessional and distracting and gives the image of not being competent at what you are doing.
Work At Home Business Rule Three
The third ground rule involves your visual image and your choice of clothing. It is very easy when your business is a work at home venture to pull on whatever is available and sit down at the computer to start your day. Don not do this. Treat your work at home business as if you were driving every day to a traditional business and dress appropriately and make sure you are not dragging around in your weekend shorts and t-shirts. This is especially so if you are headed for a meeting of any kind.
Many companies allow casual dress in the work place, which allows all manner of what is termed personal expression. In the long run this does not bode well for the business image. People are affected by what they see and they do form opinions. Make sure you are expressing the image and opinion you want them to have.
