The Right Prom Gown is Everything
Choosing the Right Dress;
Remember that your prom dress or gown makes a statement. Decide whether you want to look chic, sexy, sophisticated, traditonal or classic. Your prom dress should reflect how you feel about yourself and it should flatter your figure.
Consider your body's best features and choose a gown that shows that off. Don't choose a gown based on how it looks on someone else. There are many styles you can choose to flatter your most awesome features and hide your most unflattering features. |
PROM TIP: Getting the right size: |
Measure your bust, waist and hips then compare them to the size chart provided by the manufacturer. Don't just buy a 6 because you have always been a 6. Especially if you are shopping online |
You can look great in simple gowns remember less is more;
Always remember that you can look fabulous without revealing too much or going head-to-toe in or embroidery or sequins.
There is a fine line between looking elegant and looking provacative. Be careful not to cross it. Remember the prom is held at school! Avoid very low cut tops, heavy amounts of make up and high slit skirts. Especially avoid combinations of the above.
Go for 'Chic and Sleek' not Bouffant
The look and shape of a dress is probably the most important thing to concern your self about with your prom. Go for a slim and chic silhouetted gown. You'll be glad you did years later when you look back at your prom pictures.
PROM TIP: Fitting for your dress. |
Buy the size that corresponds to your largest measurement. If you are busty buy the size that fits your breasts not your waist. You can always have the dress altered later to fit your waist. Same goes for your hips and waist. |
Be Original
- Instead of buying a long, dull, boring slip dress or traditional gown, look for hip separates, or go vintage.
- Look for a vintage skirt (ankle length, midcalf, or at the knee) in a full, circle shape and put it with something offbeat or unexpected (black looks amazing when paired with a pastel), white, or pastel fitted turtleneck ribbed sweater....a crisp white shirt (which always looks terrific), a halter top fashioned out of a scarf (that you already own). This way, you can be sure that nobody will look exactly like you!
- Look for vintage accessories: great beaded bags, fabulous drop earrings (chandelier earrings are hot right now) interesting metallic or satin sandals or pumps.
- You can comb thrift shops, vintage stores, the Salvation Army, or the flea market. Not only will you look unique, and exude your own style and personality, but also you will save money.
- Most of all: have confidence. You don't have to buy into the cookie-cutter mold of prom night!"
