[PictureAustralia: explore Australian cultural image collections!]

PictureAustralia now available for testing!

New fields in ALG

In response to some excellent user feedback, some new fields have been added to ALG. You can now add your mobile and toll-free telephone numbers through the 'General details' online update form.
We're GST-friendly so you can now also add your Australian Business Number (ABN) using the 'General details' online update form.

Library types

The new library type of 'Audio-visual' was added to the Gateway this week. This was suggested by a respondent to our recent user survey.
From some of the responses in the user satisfaction survey, it would seem that not everyone realises that more than one library type may be assigned to an entry. For example, the library types on the left below were requested:

  • Local museum archive (NB* There is a directory of Australian archives at http://www.archivenet.gov.au/) - use ALG's "Local/Family history" + "Cultural organisation"
  • Joint-use facility TAFE / High School - use ALG's "Joint use" + "TAFE/College" + "School (K-12)"
  • Family history society - use ALG's "Local/Family history"
  • Tertiary academic - use ALG's "TAFE/College" + "University"
  • Joint use school community- use ALG's "Joint use" + "School (K-12)" + "Public"
  • Genealogy library- use ALG's "Local/Family history"

Please contact ALG Administration if you are unsure of the appropriate type/s to select, or would like to suggest additional library types.

Library volunteer programs

Does your library have a volunteer program? If you do and you have something about the program on your website, why not add a link from your Australian Libraries Gateway (ALG) entry?
Use the 'Online services' online update form to add the URL in - once added, it will be searchable via the 'Advanced search' option within the Gateway.
Online 'Help' is available from every screen on the Gateway - top and bottom of screen navigation. Contact ALG Administration with any questions you might have - as well as suggestions for ways the help might be improved.

New ALG subject heading

A new third level subject heading has recently been added:
History and Biography - History of Australia -- History of Queensland
Contact ALG Administration if you have other suggestions you would like to make. Don't forget that we need you to also provide the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and Library of Congress (LC) ranges for inclusion in the 'Help' when we set up new headings (so they may be consistently applied).

Reference enquiry services on ALG

'Reference enquiry services' on the Australian Libraries Gateway includes a link to the trial 'Ask a Question' service offered by Victoria's Virtual Library. Give it a try!
Through VVL, Victorian public library staff answer reference and research questions for Victorians and for anyone with a question about Victoria. Please let ALG Administration know when/if such a service is developed for your state or territory so we can establish a link!
NB* All ALG libraries can link to information about their online reference services via the 'Online services' online update form. The 'Advanced search' allows you to find all the libraries on the Gateway with a link to their reference enquiry service.
